WHAT IS LCARS 97?
Lcars 97 is basically a task manager. It launches five standard Windows programs for you, as well
as ten (five unregistered) customizable programs.
Although in this release, only executables may be saved as tasks, I am working on a method for
associations, which should be available in the next release.
USING LCARS 97
LCARS 97 is very simple to use. Please read on for a complete run down of the program.
There are five buttons along the right side of the screen. Here's what they do:
LCARS Edit - launches the program edit97.exe. It is a text editor with LCARS look.
Options - allows user to define how programs are launched (normal, minimized, etc.)
Register - this button brings up the registration screen. Invisible once registered.
Execute Task #1 - executes the highlighted Windows task.
Execute Task #1 - executes the highlighted user task.
Define Task - browses for executable to save as user task.
When you right click anywhere in LCARS 97, a pull down menu appears in the top left corner of the screen. It has two items. About toggles the About message over the Nexxus logo, and Exit ends the program.
USING LCARS EDIT
LCARS Edit (edit97.exe) is a basic text editor with the sample LCARS interface used in LCARS 97. As of now, it has no advanced features, such as rich text support, searches, or printing. However, this may change in time.
LCARS Edit is easier to use than LCARS 97 itself. There are five buttons to the left side of the screen. Here's what they do, although they're pretty self explanatory:
New - wipes the current text and file information
Open - brings up standard Windows 95 Open box to open files
Save - brings up Save As box to save files
Exit - ends the program
About - toggles About message.
As with any text editor, the basic idea is to type something in the text box and save it to a file.
PLEASE NOTE
LCARS Edit !CAN! be associated with text files in the explorer or similar program. Text files can be opened from the command line. (ex: "edit97 c:\windows\erase_me.txt

INSTALLING LCARS 97
Usually, you'd find this at the top of a readme. However, most of the time, people look at readme's for other reasons. Keeping this in mind, I moved this section here. Installation includes 4 steps.
1. Make a folder for Lcars 97
2. Copy contents of archive to folder
3. Double check that you have all files (see Checklist)
If you experience problems with registration or shortcuts, try deleting the ini file. Another will be created. The ini is saved as c:\windows\lcars97.ini. DO NOT EDIT THE INI DIRECTLY!
If you are lacking one or more of the files with the asterix (*) next to it, check out
Windows95.com. They have easy access to all files you'll need. Look for VB 5.0 Runtimes.
CHECKLIST
1. Edit97.exe
2. Lcars97.exe
3. Lcars97.exe
4. VB5DB.dll*
5. ComDlg32.ocx*
6. Msvbvm50.dll*
* Not included with Lcars 97 but required. Check out Windows95.com to get the VB5 Runtime files.

USER SUGGESTIONS
I beleive that users should have some degree of control over programs they use. If you have a suggestion for a feature, why not send it in? Get typing now!
A FINAL NOTE
To everybody out there programming with Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0, I highly suggest you invest in upgrading to the mighty power of Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0: Professional Edition. It rocks.
